Down on the Farm Report — 5/2

I thought it’d be interesting to take a look at some goings on in the minors of the Brewers system.

First the good:

Matt LaPorta hit two more home runs today in an afternoon game for the Hunstville Stars.  This gives him 9 already on the young season to go along with 30 RBIs, a .319 BA, .413 OBP, and a 1.138 OPS!!

The Hunstville Stars (AA) have now won 8 in a row and sit atop the Southern League standings at 19-8.

Another top Crew prospect at Hunstville, Mat Gamel, has 5 homers, 20 RBI’s, a .374 BA, and a 1.105 OPS.

And the not-so good:

Jeff Weaver struggled in his first outing as a Brewer farmhand.  He was staked to an early lead but couldn’t hold on.  He went 5 innings allowing 6 hits, 2 walks, 4 runs and striking out 7.

Meanwhile, after Weaver’s struggles Zack Jackson came in to pitch and gave up a run.  That’s right, the Zack Jackson that has pitched in the majors and many were high on has been so bad this year he’s been demoted to the bullpen to work stuff out.  He has a 1.94 WHIP and a 8.89 ERA.

The Nashville Sounds have struggled and are in last place in their division at 7-18.  The Sounds don’t have a lot of the Brewers big-time prospects though.  Instead they have a lot of guys that have been up and down in the majors like Dillon, Branyan, Nix, Rottino, Munson, Stocker and a bunch of guys that seem to be AAAA type players.
